After a few sessions of brainstorming and trying to come up with a thesis that could wrap up the community portal as a whole, it was decided that this project would be focusing on one resource. The capstone idea became a focus on creating connections via buying/selling textbooks. There are a few reasons why there is a need for a space where students can sell and buy from one another:
- “the average college student pays $1,200 per year on textbooks and supplies”.
- 65 percent of the students decided against buying a textbook for a class because it was too expensive.
- 94 percent of those students were afraid that their decision would hurt their grade in the class.
The idea would not be about competing against the bookstore on Campus even though prices would be at fair market value, but to give students the possibility to recycle their used textbooks when the bookstore isn’t buying back their certain book.
Since textbooks are important there are two research that will follow:
A textbook traffic survey and a price comparison of the Umaine bookstore pricing as well as popular websites.
