Gant Chart:

NMD498 Capstone Timeline

Progress:

-completed population infographics (“who” section)

population-town-01

  • Made design decision to redo first infographic (due to mixed feedback, confusion & personal decision). I jumped into the first infographic without thinking about the entire cohesiveness of the website and how dependent one design is on each of the other sections.
  • -Didn’t want to continue in an unfleshed-out direction
  •  decided to scrap work, start fresh =  create better design basis so the entire website can flow easier from one infographic to another.

town-population-infograph

county-population-infograph

-completed pure CSS paralax template for web design

http://kayleighdefrancesco.nmdprojects.net/nmd445/parallax/Parallax2.html

  •  focus for end of semester 1: implementing assets (infographics & illustrations into web design/parallax design)

-Current focus:  finishing “demographics” & “industries” infographics before open studios night

-collect tourism input/survey results thru winter break

  • created Qualtrics survey (free w/ UMaine license) = initial test
  • plan = distribute link via social media, email, new media night +flyers

Qualtrics Survey – Tourism Input

Future focus:

* Decision to make 2nd semester focused on tourism section of website

  • once survey results/feedback are collected – will curate “top spots” and begin implementation into website

MILESTONE REVIEW 1

Opening Statement:

An infographic – based website can portray information that is otherwise easily overlooked.

NMD498 Capstone Timeline

-Prior focus: establishing direction & outlining details

-Current focus: non-tourism infographics/data

The biggest step of getting on board with this website was deciding what information would be the most important/necessary to feature.  I broke this into 2 categories:

1. what people want to know that they don’t already

– or that they might commonly forget

2. info that accurately represents & portrays Maine as people ALREADY know it (e.g “lobster, trees)

I also decided it was important to focus on incorporating information that is mostly unchanging, (i.e. that won’t need updating like “current political leaders”) as they will be designed and visualized, not text written in via HTML that could easily be changed…

So I sketched out a breakdown of the different series of content for the infographics:

infographic_topics user-information-flowchart-01

-All statistical/fact-based info collected collected from US Census Bureau & maine.gov…

BUT, the tourism/”where” portion of this website is opinion-based.  So I brainstormed how to collect this information through crowdsourcing:

Design:

Design kit to follow theme & style for entire website and info graphics, illustrations.

Web Dev:

Sample mockup translated onto webpage – HTML, CSS (bare bones) :

http://kayleighdefrancesco.nmdprojects.net/nmd445/colored-boxes/colored-boxes.html

-I’ve also spent time researching WordPress alternatives and themes as a backup to hand-coded site (just in case).

Closing statement:

Many people have worked hard to put Maine on the map and it has grown into a unique destination because of this and its natural culture.  Visualize Maine is the attempt to portray this beauty and share what makes it the highly regarded “Vacationland”.

Computer-free Capstone

Visualizing Maine: a Tourism Website, is of course, a project based entirely online and composed of digital art and construction.  The idea was based upon the desire and focus of graphic arts and tourism, and the intent of presenting the two in form of a unique website.  The standout features of this project are the incorporation of parallax scrolling and infographics/illustrations.

If this project was to be completed instead without the use of any computer technology, I would choose to present these graphics printed at a large scale.  This would become a presentation piece or an installation of sorts, for people to read and view at their own leisure, similarly to online, but in person.  I envision the prints at convention and visitor’s centers across the state of Maine where tourists stop in to collect information and gather destination ideas.  The project might also be effective at campus universities when prospective students visit and assess what the area (or the state of Maine, for out-of-staters) has to offer.

The only difference printed infographics might have is in the overall visual appeal.  Infographic-based websites appear unique to most traditional website, and so often drive the viewer to continue exploring.  Illustrations that were intended for web don’t always have as great an effect when printed out on paper.  It takes more “wow-factor”for them to be interested.  But at least it would probably be a bit more appealing than a standard brochure or visitor’s booklet.

Capstone opening:

Over the past few weeks, my capstone has consisted of lots of research and reconsideration of different possibilities.  My biggest hurdle was deciding a clear path to follow and then rapidly jumping into beginning stages.

Closing statement:

There is a lot of work left to do, but I believe I am on the right path of my capstone and any critique so far would help immensely.

NMD498 Capstone Proposal- Version 1

Many to Many Exercise 1

1.(Passamaquoddy language)

Solution B would be the new media solution, as it would allow the information to be delivered to many different people (via the tag cloud), but instead of using professional companies or people (e.g. native american language experts), it would use crowdsourcing from the actual native american community

2. Neglected Ruins

Solution B would be the new media solution because it involves outside people actually engaging with the abandoned buildings.  Instead of a specific film crew, the “audience” would not only explore the website, but would explore the buildings too.  Option A would only distribute the DVD’s to historical societies, which would only allow for a limited particular audience to appreciate the beauty of the old buildings.

3. Computer Animation

Solution B would be the best option here because the iPad app would allow for many more people to experience ad understand the computer-animation process.  Solution A creates an interface that only so few people would be able to experience.

4. Broken Fountain

In terms of a many-to-many solution, Solution A would be the best option.  Repurposing the fountain into a garden would involve different student groups and staff, which is a great example of peer sharing, like file sharing, but non-digital).  Option B does not involve people quite like option A does, as it is more of a performance art piece, however it would incorporate the new media “tech side” required for a new media capstone.
